Attendees of this weekend’s 2013 ADAC Eifel Race at the infamous Nürburgring will have the chance to experience a glimpse of motorsport’s golden era, with Mercedes-Benz set to field a host of classic vehicles in celebration of the race that saw the birth of the legendary Silver Arrows.

Staged at the Nürburgring since the circuit opened in 1927, the original Eifel Race was won by a Mercedes-Benz, heralding the start of a rich racing heritage that continues today. The 1934 event also marked the first time that a Mercedes-Benz race car ran in its distinctive silver livery.

Legend has it that the winning W25 originally featured white paintwork, which was removed from the cars before the start to reduce weight. Manfred von Brauchitsch claimed victory as the Silver Arrows confirmed themselves as conquerors of the ‘Green Hell’.

Visitors will be treated to a vast spectrum of racing cars in various categories throughout the weekend, from the Le Mans-winning Sauber Mercedes C9 to supercharged sports cars from the early days of the Eifel Race.

One car that will feature prominently is the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE FHR ‘Tailfin’ racer, which is set to evoke memories of the German manufacturer’s major racing victories in the 1960s. Another machine to be showcased is the Mercedes-Benz SSK, to be driven by Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador and ex-Formula One driver Jochen Mass in the ‘Elephant Race’ on Sunday.

Of course, the weekend is about more than just racing cars. To ensure fans are fully immersed in the history of the circuit and the race, other highlights include the display of a Mercedes-Benz O 3500 racing transporter. Produced in 1954, the O 3500 was once tasked with transporting the legendary Mercedes W 196 F1 cars raced by Juan Manuel Fangio and Sir Stirling Moss during the 1954 and 1955 seasons. Based on an old bus, the transporter fully embodies the spirit and culture of the early days of motorsport, and has been recreated with the greatest possible authenticity by Mercedes-Benz.

As part of the weekend’s supporting programme, Mercedes-Benz owners will have exclusive access to the paddock, as well as the opportunity to take passenger rides on the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit in the Mercedes 300 SE. Autograph sessions and meet and greets with the brand ambassadors will also give fans the chance to meet their heroes.
