Following the global launch of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class in May, the covers have come off the S 63 AMG, set to bring unmatched performance to the luxury vehicle segment.
The flagship model combines the renowned technology, safety and elegance of the S-Class with 585hp from a AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine producing 900Nm of torque, while the entire package is 100kg lighter than its predecessor.
“We have unquestionably achieved our aim of making the new S 63 AMG more powerful, lightweight and efficient than its predecessor. In terms of driving dynamics as well, the S 63 AMG has made giant leaps forward,” Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, said.
The most powerful member of the BlueDIRECT engine family is also the world’s most efficient series-produced V8 engine. Covering 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph, it’s more fuel efficient than the previous model, 27.9mpg, despite delivering an extra 41hp.
Exhaust flaps remain closed within the AMG sports exhaust when the S 63 AMG’s seven-speed sports transmission is in Controlled Efficiency mode, but open in Sport and Manual modes to release the distinctive AMG sound.
Weight savings have been achieved across the board through the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy, including the use of the ground-breaking Lithium-ion battery introduced on the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, saving over 20kg alone.
Together, the engine gains and weight reduction enable a power-to-weight ratio of 3.49kg/hp.
The S 63 AMG is packed with technology, including ESP Curve Dynamic Assist as standard to help eliminate understeer through corners and Magic Body Control, which reads the road ahead and adjusts the sports suspension accordingly.
Longer lasting and 20% lighter, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option for the first time, along with AMG forged light-alloy wheels in either 19 inch or 20 inch.
An imposing yet elegant body combines with a luxurious interior, featuring newly-developed AMG sports seats with electrical adjustments and options including folding tables in the rear and a Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system.
The Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG will make its first public appearance at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
