The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is staging an exhibition of the world’s greatest sports coupés, which will be on display from April to October. Each car that features in the exhibition was voted for by a group of celebrities polled by the museum, including actor Patrick Dempsey, filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and John Lasseter, musicians James Hetfield of Metallica and Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame, and racers Bobby Rahal and Tanner Foust.
The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, which appears in the exhibition, was the personal favourite of Bruce Meyer, car collector. Meyer explained his choice: “It defines spectacular design, innovative mechanics, and performance. It’s an icon.”
Ian Callum, Jaguar design director, agreed: “Such a Teutonic shape, just so strong and direct. And yet there are interesting details, like the chrome streamlines. It’s so confident.”
