Leader of the pack
Encompassing the pinnacle of design, performance, and functionality, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has outshone other new cars to hit the road in 2013, by winning the ADAC’s “Gelber Engel 2013″ award, by popular vote.
Once a year, the ADAC (German automobile club) pits machine against machine in a public vote to find Germany’s most preferred new car – conferring upon the winner, the “Gelber Engel” (yellow angel) award. With more than 18 million members, the ADAC is Germany’s – and Europe’s – largest automobile club, making this prize one of the motor industry’s most prestigious crowns.
This year saw a return of over 290,000 votes from the ADAC’s magazine readership and online user-base. Factors considered when voting not only included design and image, but price-performance ratio, functionality, efficiency, safety, and eco-friendliness. It’s easy to see why the A-Class beat 52 other contenders as leader of the pack in all of these areas combined.
Its bold, sculpted lines make a powerful statement for such a compact car. This is Mercedes-Benz redefining image at this end of the size spectrum. The interior isn’t short of statement detail either – design features taken from their super car range, like air vents found in the SLS AMG, give the A-Class a serious, sporty feel.
The performance specs of the A-Class also confirm a serious, sports-like aspect to its handling. For a four-door hatch, the aerodynamics are revolutionary; boasting a drag coefficient value of 0.29 makes this is a nimble little beast – as well as impressively fuel-efficient. And packed with high-tech features such as a 5.8-inch colour console display, Bluetooth® connectivity, optional Cloud-based multimedia system, it’s no wonder voters viewed it as a leader in modern functionality.
With a combined fuel consumption reading in at 51.4mpg on the A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY, state of the art safety features such as a radar-based collision warning system, and emission stats as low as 98g/km it’s no wonder the A-Class has been voted favorite car of a modern, performance-demanding, eco-conscious market.
As if they need it, this triumphant win should confirm to Mercedes-Benz that with their new A-Class, they remain steadfast in the hearts of their native German consumer base, and at the forefront of automotive design and engineering the world over.
