Mercedes-Benz takes podium finish at the Malaysian GP
Having made a purposeful start to the 2013 Formula One season in Australia, the Mercedes AMG Petronas team has emerged with a podium place at the latest Grand Prix in Sepang, Malaysia.
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg qualified in fourth and sixth places on the grid respectively, giving them a key advantage from the very start of the race. Both made a switch from hard to medium tyres during the first two stages of qualifying, helping to adapt to the hot and humid conditions. As rain began to fall during the second session, the wet track made life more difficult for all drivers – but the duo kept a good pace throughout.
Of the two drivers, it was Hamilton who eventually reached the podium at the end of the actual race. His third-place finish represented a milestone for Mercedes-Benz, as it’s his first podium place with the new team and achieved after only two races. He also fended off challenges from former team-mate Jenson Button to claim the third spot. The closely-fought race could easily have seen both drivers make the top three – Rosberg finished only half a second behind his team-mate in a well-deserved fourth place.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes AMG Petronas now ranks fourth – just three points behind the third-ranked team. Hamilton claims the same place in the driver rankings, separated from third by only one point, with Rosberg following closely behind in seventh.
